Cannes Brûlèes (which this installation is named after) can be described as a multimedia symbolic ceremony in which its psychological messages take various forms and are manifested in a variety of artistic behaviours – music -making, poetics, vernacular languages, dramatics, dance, and other acrobatic gestures.
Exploring the impact of ritual, Garneau mines his own Caribbean heritage to immerse his audience in the complex history of emancipation and masquerade within Trinidad and Tobago.
He works with raw and lightly processed materials, to cultivate a visual language steeped in burlesque, handicraft, and iconoclasm to pay homage to the ingenuity and resilience of his forbearers.
Braxton Garneau is an emerging visual artist living in Edmonton- Amiskwaciwâskahikan, Alberta. He holds a BFA degree from the University of Alberta, and a Diploma of Fine Art from Grant MacEwan University. Garneau integrates his collection of harvested and hand processed materials with printmaking, painting, and drawing to create portraits and corporeal forms. Garneau’s practice is informed by the notion of mastery, the privilege of viewership, and art historical depictions of power. Through the combination of assemblage and traditional mediums, he engages with the idea of labor, material honesty, and old-world mythologies.
